Honorable Mention
MUSKET RIDGE GOLF CLUB
BANQUET HALL
WITH KITCHEN ADDITION
Meyersville
,
Maryland
Category: Commercial
Designed by
Grater
Architects, P.C.

Sitting
along the edge of the Catoctin Mountains just outside
Frederick
,
Maryland
, Musket Ridge Golf Club ranks as one of the top public courses in the
mid-Atlantic region. It’s proximity to the dramatically expanding
town of Frederick, combined with the expansive beauty of the views over the
course and west across a large farming valley, suggested opportunities for
the addition of a large banquet hall that could be utilized by the
surrounding communities.
The
Owners challenged the design team to develop an addition that would
compliment the existing clubhouse, while establishing a presence sufficient
for weddings and regional conferences, and an identity separate from the
golfing tradition. The addition needed to be substantial and
compositionally self sufficient, yet clearly secondary to the clubhouse
itself.

Overall,
the design program included the banquet hall, commercial kitchen with
service for the hall and the clubhouse, support facilities, and golf cart
storage at the basement level. Using the varied colonial estate models
that exist throughout the Shenandoah Valley and north into the
Catoctin Mountains
, the Architects focused on the variety of horse barns and ancillary farm
buildings completing these residential compounds. Numerous examples
demonstrate the use of vernacular forms, assembled in formal relationships,
and projecting an elegance and simplicity characteristic of meaningful
places.
The
sitting of the banquet hall responds to the knobby ridgeline bending around
the west face of the clubhouse and to the concept of an entry axis distinct
from the existing building. Both buildings can come together and
cluster around the arrival and parking at the top of the hill, while
developing individual and differing spaces at the course to the west. The
curved site layout allows for two competing needs: a unified identity
at the main entrance and privacy for these diverse functions to occur
simultaneously.

The
President's Message

Peter
Sorber, AIA
I
first would like to extend my wishes that all of you have had a peaceful and
safe holiday season. As my first President’s message I would first like to
introduce myself and give a brief personal history. My name is Pete Sorber
and I have worked in the architectural field for nearly thirty years and as
a licensed professional for twenty five of those years. I’ve lived in
central New York most of my life except for a short but enjoyable five years
in Denver, Colorado during my carefree years after college. Since my return
to area in the early 1980’s I have had the pleasure of working with
numerous central New York firms such as Dal Pos Associates, JCM Architects
and Beardsley Design Associates and through those affiliations I have had
the fortune to work with many qualified professionals in the architectural
field.
I
am currently a partner with Wayne LaFrance at Lake Architectural which we
established nearly five years ago with an office in Marcellus and a
satellite office in Charlotte, North Carolina. I am married with two
children and live in the Onondaga Hill area where my children attend the
Onondaga Central School District.
My
plan as President of your Board is to build upon the efforts of Julia and
other past presidents to add value to your membership in the AIA and to
enhance our position in the community with which we live and work. In early
January the Board will be meeting to discuss the direction and specific
efforts that the Board should pursue for the upcoming year and I hope to
provide a summary of that meeting in the February message.
On
behalf of the Board of Directors I would like to extend our wishes for a
happy, safe and prosperous year 2010 to all our members. I look forward to
working with your Board in the upcoming year to serve the members of the
Central New York Chapter and I appreciate the opportunity to serve all of
you.
Sincerely
Peter
Sorber, AIA

WILDERNESS.....

Why
do Architects stamp and sign drawings and specifications? This may sound
like a sermon to the Choir. Like all things in the good book and New Years
resolutions it must be reviewed at least once a year.

PHASE TWO OF IDP 2.0
BEGINS JANUARY 1, 2010
As
many of you may already know Phase Two of the transition to IDP 2.0 will be
implemented beginning on January 1, 2010. There are two parts to Phase
Two which are outlined below.
IDP
2.0, in its second phase, will seek to modify the definition of “direct
supervision” to reflect current architectural practice. This update
will allow interns to communicate with their supervisors through a
combination of personal contact and remote communication (i.e. e-mail,
online markups, webinars, etc.). This is to allow for the fact that
many firms practice in various states and internationally which challenges
the former NCARB definition of direct supervision. While the wording
of this definition may allow for more flexibility in the types of
interactions an intern may have with their supervisor it does not change the
fact that the IDP supervisor is still expected oversee the work of the
intern and sufficient professional knowledge so that they can determine that
the intern understands and is performing his/her work within the
professional standard of care.
Also
occurring in Phase Two, the language describing the IDP Training
Requirements will change from “700 training units” to “5,600 training
hours”. This is still the same amount of time that was required to
complete IDP before. This part of Phase Two simply allows interns to
record and report their hours directly rather than having to convert them to
the training units each time they report. This will allow for an
easier and more accurate experience reporting process. Previously
entered units will automatically be converted to training hours within the
e-EVR system.
One
additional item to be implemented on the first day of next year involves the
Emerging Professional’s Companion (EPC). Starting on January 1,
2010, interns, whether or not employed, may earn minimum training hours by
having a mentor sign off on EPC activities. These exercises, which
allow interns to gain a maximum of 1,800 training hours via free web-based
training opportunities, count towards supplementary education and can be
submitted through the e-EVR under the “My Supplementary Education”
section.
