Featured Project

2009 Honorable Mention

Lakefront Cottage

Category: Residential

Designed by

Holmes▪King▪Kallquist & Associates, LLP

The owners of the Lakefront Cottage acquired this property with the goal of rejoining pieces of an original estate that had been subdivided by previous owners.

  • On the acquired property was a 1970s modern house that was in contrast with the fabric of the historic neighborhood.

  • The original 1816 boathouse was collapsing into the lake and had been remuddled in the process of trying to shore up the structure.

The architect was tasked with:

  • Designing a new cottage on the site of the 1970s dwelling that meets the needs of an extended family and for entertaining guests.

  • Visually reconnecting the new cottage with the original late 1890s main house and the 1816 boathouse.

  • Adding exterior entertaining space.

  • Utilization of clean, classic lines with a modern feel.

  • Rescuing the boathouse and transforming it into an additional guest accommodation.

In response to the charge, the architect created a summer cottage with unique architectural elements woven into the design. The key solutions include the following:

  • The structure design utilizes the boathouse turret as a focal point of the new cottage as viewed from the lake perspective, juxtaposed against the main house.

  • The marriage of the Victorian forms and detailing of the main house with the cottage by echoing its brackets, pilasters and railing details.

  • A discrete paneled door off the round gallery space of the guesthouse conceals the stair to the private suites.  As one enters across the hardwood and onyx inlaid floor, the hidden stair is not revealed and the access to the second-floor viewing gallery is a mystery.

  • The entertaining kitchen boasts custom, gloss-lacquer finish, book-matched walnut cabinetry with contrasting graphite metallic accents.  The catering kitchen in the rear is accessed through hidden doors and a service pass-through.

  • The turret portion of the cottage contains the living space with multiple conversation areas embracing the sweeping vistas of the lake, and is on axis with the historic boathouse.

  • The master suite and two guest retreats take advantage of the lake views via the second-floor viewing gallery in the upper portion of the turret.

  • The exterior entertaining space includes a vanishing edge pool, hot tub, sun shelf, in-pool bar, sunning and dining areas, all with integrated planting beds.

The boathouse restoration included the removal of extraneous structures added in the effort to shore up the continuous dish-shaped corbel, which forms the balcony.  In addition, the following elements contributed to the restoration:

  • Second-floor living space ceilings were removed to expose the original framing of the roof and turret forms.

  • Hand-forged collar ties were added to brace the roof structure.

  • The first floor, the former canoe storage at the waters edge, was converted to guest quarters.

The President's Message

Peter Sorber, AIA

Well I believe that spring may be upon us. After a long winter we can look forward to the return of longer days and perhaps even some sun. Just as spring spawns growth and new life in our natural environment my hope is that the season will foster an increase in growth in business for all our members. I would like to remind everyone to continue to refer to the newsletter for all the upcoming events planned.

Until next month!

Respectfully

Peter Sorber , AIA

A VOICE IN THE WILDERNESS.....

HAVING FUN? LET’S COMPARE NOTES.

Congress is struggling with Health Care. We have been struggling with Building Code reform since 1983. The State Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code encompassing one volume of 425 pages has grown to 8 volumes plus endless Reference Standards that we are reviewing today.

GLOBAL WARMING AND THE ARCHITECT

By Dean A. Biancavilla, AIA, LEED AP, Holmes King Kallquist & Associates, Architects, Syracuse, NY dab@hkkarchitects.com

Last month we gave you the Beach House at Truro, Massachusetts as an example of good design and green design combined. This month we look at a skyscraper in Chicago called the ‘Aqua Tower’which you may have already seen in the magazine “GreenSource.” It is a new 82 story residential tower in the windy city. If you remember our article in December 2007 we covered another innovative skyscraper called the “Spire” and its interesting that yet another attractive design now graces the Chicago skyline.

ASHLEY McGRAW ARCHITECTS ADDS ENGINEERING EXPERIENCE TO STAFF

Vinay Devanathan to work with Advanced Building Studio on sophisticated energy modeling

Vinay Devanathan

Ashley McGraw Architects, PC is excited to announce the addition of Vinay Devanathan as an Advanced Building Designer in our Advanced Building Studio. Vinay is a graduate Mechanical Engineering student at Syracuse University with experience in Complex Airflow Modeling and Computational Fluid Dynamics.

“Vinay will bring welcome depth to the HVAC side of our current modeling work,” says Advanced Building Studio Principal Peter Larson aia, leed ap. “This brings our firm one step closer to our vision of the union of architecture and engineering — to create buildings that perform at the highest level from the perspective of energy and other natural resources.”

Ashley McGraw’s Advanced Building Studio is a research-driven studio that uses sophisticated modeling techniques to determine how a building’s design will impact its use of energy. By collecting and analyzing this information in real-time, the studio can advise architects and engineers on the best strategies to achieve the specific energy performance goals for each project. Ashley McGraw Architects has used this paradigm to design two net-zero fossil fuel energy additions to schools in Liverpool and Liberty, New York.
