The
President's Message

Joseph Piraino, AIA
This
past Saturday we had our 2008 Celebration of Architecture and Design Awards.
This year’s event was the largest ever with 154 attendees and 17 corporate
sponsors. If you missed this event then you missed the best event of the
year. I will try to give you a brief summary of what you missed. First there
was a cocktail hour from 6 – 7 pm where we had our entertainer Cris
Johnson delight small groups with card tricks and other feats of magic. Cris
really set the tone that this was not our typical AIA event.
From
7:10 to 7:30 we had to have our Annual Meeting to elect our officers and the
annual report by the Treasurer
and President. We decided to have the annual meeting at the Awards
Celebration because we still have not figured out a way to get a quorum at a
separate Annual Meeting. We tried to keep this chapter business short but
with enough substance to fulfill our Bylaws. The President’s Report was an
exciting brief synopsis of our past year given by myself, highlighting some
of our successes. First I mentioned our continuing effort to engage our
Associate Members or Emerging Professionals; we sent out a survey and found
out that we needed to reduce the cost of events such as this. We listened
and reduced the price of this event from $50 to $30 for associate Members.
We revised our Website, thanks to Bob Haley and created a new sponsorship
committee of Jim Miller and Carlton Holmes. The success of this new
committee was apparent with the logos of 17 sponsors shown all around the
podium. We renewed our continuing education programs and Lunch and Learns,
thanks to Claude Louis Boisnier. I also mentioned our Golf Outing which is
always successful thanks to Mr. Goodman and our Lobby Day efforts where we
actually saw the Wicks Law have the threshold increase.
Robert
Johnson then presented his treasurers report which was short and not so
exciting given the topic, but Robert did provide us with a financial
statement and budget for next year that was very colorful and even had pie
charts. After that John Goodman came to the podium and presented me with my
President’s Medal and gave chocolates, from I can’t say where, to the
ladies on our new Board, Julia Marshall, Stephanie Wright and Brenda Law.
Thanks John for that thoughtful surprise.
After
the Annual meeting was completed dinner started and Cris Johnson came back
on to entertain us with some incredible illusions until 8:45. At 9pm the
Design Awards started with the two President’s Awards. In the spirit of
AIA National‘s new Integrated Project Delivery Method, I choose an Owner
and a Contractor to receive this award. The President’s Award and Design
Awards winners are listed here in this letter so please review and
congratulate the winners if you see them. After the awards the bar stayed
open until 10pm and many of us stayed and danced until they kicked us out.
I
was so happy to see so many come out on Saturday it was such a great event.
As I stated in many of my past messages this event is typically our best of
the year and as well it should be. The Design Awards is the one time where
we all can get dressed up and have a social evening out to honor our own.
Design is after all why most of us became Architects. So thank you to all of
the firms who submitted but did not win an award and congratulations to all
the winners. I would also like to thank Lisa Maynard from King and King
Architects for all her hard work she put in to make this years event the
best ever. And to all of you who could not make it, sorry but you really
missed out; maybe we will see you there next year.
Well
it is November 10th and Neel has been hounding me for this
month’s message. I am sorry I held up the newsletter but I really wanted
to talk about the Design Awards. I can’t believe how fast the year went
by, I have only one more of these messages to write. I hope you all have a
Happy and Safe Thanksgiving.
Take
Care,

A VOICE IN THE
WILDERNESS.....
by Dick Lafferty
Paul Malo, Professor Emeritus of Syracuse University
School of Architecture was honored at a memorial service on October 11 in
Hendricks Chapel. This unique experience left a lasting impression on the
attendees. It was a deep emotional outpouring of love and it revealed many
facets of the man, Paul Malo.
All there knew either Paul the student or scholar or
neighbor or musician or preservationist or artist or family man and all
viewed him as a friend. No, much more then that, the term used by all
implied or stated was mentor. Each person who spoke implied Paul was a wise
and trusted counselor or teacher. It would be impossible to view his 78
years as segments. His life obvious became a constant exploration and ever
expanding judgments of the merits, faults, value or truth of all maters that
he discovered most important and significant.
It was said that Paul wrote and investigated more
subjects in retirement than most tenured professorial candidates provide
today. His prolific writing was noted by one asking a single question with a
treasured enlightened five-page letter resonance. His caring manner was
noted by the way in which he expressed his view of delicate situations. His
love of music was remembered by his playing the piano at dusk and the melody
floating as a breeze over head to the beloved river. His willingness to give
credit when it was due was exemplified by the Great Camp owner who Paul felt
needed a picture of the millionaire who had it built and sent the owner a
framed picture of the millionaire for hanging if only in the heater room.
These are only a very few examples, from a listener’s memory, presented
and each participant clearly treasures the one they felt was Paul.
We knew Paul as an architect. He had his mentors and in
the early formative years it was Harley McKee who provided a strong historic
pride that Paul carried through his life. This is noted in this month “You
came along way Arch!” with a young Paul and a history sketch from the 1955
MODULE (The School of Architecture Year Book). I shall end this with a
quotation from the newspaper and memorial service:
“Death is not extinguishing the light. It is only
putting out the lamp because the dawn has come.”’ Rabindranath Tagore.
It is time to become a mentor.
YOU
CAME A LONG WAY ARCH!

FUTURE
SHOCK (Electric that is)
The
following is an excerpt from the new book by Tom Freidman, Hot, Flat and
Crowded. Friedman’s new book has some important discussions of what we
could do in the future about energy, global warming and, yes, architecture.
Below is the excerpt from the book about some of our future with smart
grids, electric cars and other exciting future elements:

Last month we were ‘pummeled’ by the presidential
campaigns talking about “Joe the
Plumber” to the point we were all becoming tired of the simplified
version of middle-class America he was
made to represent. But I am using him as a lead-in to a better story.
I want to talk to you about another
Joe. Joe Lstiburek. Actually Dr. Joe. And he is a ‘different’ kind
of plumber if I can stretch the
analogy.
